THE ACOUSTIC-WAVE STORY
From a wave in water to a question in medicine.
A line drawn in sand. A raised dot beneath a fingertip. A diagram on a screen. Knowledge travels when we make it understandable.

Begin with physics
A pressure disturbance travels through a medium. In medical shockwave technology, a deliberately produced pulse is directed towards a defined target. Its shape, intensity and location matter as much as the fact that it is called a wave.
A different purpose, a different device
Shockwaves are used in lithotripsy to fragment calculi such as kidney stones. Musculoskeletal ESWT uses different treatment objectives and parameters. Sharing the word shockwave does not make every application interchangeable.
The future belongs to better questions
Which outcome matters to a patient? Was there an appropriate comparison group? How long did follow-up last? What harms were sought? A modern reading room makes those questions part of the story.
Respect for the long history of learning
Our library imagery celebrates learning across time and cultures. Ancient texts and traditional practices are not presented as proof that modern ESWT works. Historical curiosity and clinical evidence have different roles.
